One such initiative is through the processing of mangrove materials into edible products. Many of these processing methods were learned through Blue Forest\u2019s Mangrove NTFP (non-timber forest products) Processing training event.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This training, held in Sapat ward, Indragiri Hilir regency, located in southeastern Riau province, aimed to improve the capacity of local communities to take advantage of mangrove NTFPs and fisheries resources. The main participants were members of the Sapat ward community, as well as representatives of the Mandah Forest Management Unit (<\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">KPH- Kesatuan Pengelolaan Hutan<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">) and teachers from the local high school. The training was facilitated by experienced Blue Forest team members Ratna Fadilah and Andi Darmawansyah.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/blue-forests.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/11\/WhatsApp-Image-2023-10-24-at-12.13.39-2.jpeg\" width=\"408\" height=\"306\" \/><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Bu Ratna explains the benefits and potential of mangrove ecosystems as a food source<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The emphasis on mangrove NTFPs is part of Blue Forests\u2019 strategy to foster sustainable community mangrove management. Participants learned all about the wealth of food products that can be gathered and processed from Sapat ward\u2019s mangroves, including flour from the <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">tumu <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">(<\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Bruguiera sexangula<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">), fruit tarts and candies from the fruit of the nipa palm (<\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Nypa fruticans<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">), jelly desserts colored with <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">jeruju<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (<\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Acanthus ilicifolius<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">) leaf extract, brownies from <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">tumu<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> flour, sauces from mangrove clams (<\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Polymesoda expansa<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">), and jam from <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">pedada <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">(<\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Sonneratia caseolaris<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">) fruit.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/blue-forests.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/11\/photo-output-_1_-2-scaled.jpg\" width=\"318\" height=\"318\" \/><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/blue-forests.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/11\/photo-output-scaled.jpg\" width=\"319\" height=\"319\" \/><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Examples of mangrove food products<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">As a result of this training, many participants remarked that they felt they now had the necessary understanding of how to turn mangrove ingredients into high value food products. They also expressed their hope that processing mangrove products could become a viable alternative livelihood to empower their communities. Meanwhile, one participant, a local high school teacher, stated that the training was very helpful for increasing their understanding of mangrove ecosystems.
