Background
Yayasan Hutan Biru (YHB) or Blue Forests Foundation is a non-profit organization dedicated to repairing damage and restoring mangrove ecosystems around the world. YHB’s main objective is to promote local traditional communities rights, including fishermen and farmers, in managing the environment in a sustainable manner. YHB facilitates the ideas and information exchange on mangrove conservation, alternative livelihood development, and environmental education.
YHB was established in Yogyakarta in 2011 as a replacement and successor to the Mangrove Action Project (MAP) Indonesia programs, previously known as the Yayasan Akar Rumput Laut (YARL) which was formed in 2001. The paradigm of YHB’s movement is “local to global to local”.
Over time we have developed several iconic programs; all following the same learner-centred, action-research problem-solving approach. These include Coastal Field Schools, Ecological Mangrove Rehabilitation, Kampung LESTARI – indigenous engagement in planning and governance.
